As your initial assignment please introduce yourself and tell us about you. Highlight the following points:

  • Personal background
  • Business background / experience
  • Educational background
  • Your background in online programs (for instance, is this your first online course?)

2. After you have posted your information, read through your classmate's bios and welcome them by responding to their postings.

Session 2: Why Ethics

The selected reading for this section is designed to give you an
understanding of why classes on Ethics are required and how we
can learn from developing ourselves more professionally, as well as an understanding of confidentiality procedures and how they apply in
the child welfare field.

Forum S2: Confidentiality Discussion

1. After reading through the sections, please address the following:

  • Give examples of when you need to ensure that confidentiality practices were followed.
  • What difficulties did you encounter?
  • How did you overcome those obstacles?

Session 3: Code of Ethics

Reading Assignment

The selected readings are designed to give you a basic understanding of what defines "ethics" and how our values and behaviors affect our decision making.

1. Read the sections on Ethics

2. Read the NASW Code of Ethics (required if taking for SW CEUs, optional for other students)

3. Read the Residential Child Care Worker Code of Ethics (required for all residential staff and foster/adoptive parents taking this course, optional for SW)

4. Read the Foster Parents' Code of Ethics

Forum S3: Ethical Principles Discussion

Social Workers receiving CEUs:

1. Please chose two of the 8 ethical principles in the NASW Code and respond by addressing the following questions

  • What do these principles mean to you?
  • How do you apply them in your job?
  • What obstacles or challenges have you faced in meeting these principles?
  • How have you overcome these obstacles/challenges?

2. Respond to at least two other student's postings ­ preferably addressing principles you have not chosen for your assignment. Residential staff and foster/adoptive parents may also respond in this section.

Residential staff and foster/adoptive parents:

1. Please choose two of the 8 principles listed in the Residential Child Care Code of Ethics. Respond to them by addressing the following questions:

  • What do these principles mean to you?
  • How do you apply them in your job?
  • What obstacles or challenges have you faced in meeting these principles?
  • How have you overcome these obstacles/challenges?

2. Respond to at least two other student's postings ­ preferably addressing principles you have not chosen for your assignment. Social Workers may also respond to students in this section.

Session 4: Core Values

1. Discuss how you chose your values and what you learned from this exercise.

Session 5: Case Scenarios

Reading Assignment

The selected case scenarios were developed to provide you possible situations that may occur in your job as a childcare professional.

1. Read the section Case Scenarios.

1. Respond to the reading material by addressing the following: Choose two of the cases you read and respond by identifying the dilemmas involved and you think is the right thing to do.

2. Respond to at least two other student's postings. Try to choose those who covered different scenarios than you.

Session 6: Diversity

The selected reading assignment is to help you understand the importance of cultural sensitivity is in working with people.

1. Read the section on Diversity.

2. Complete the Diversity Profile. Print out the Diversity Profile Worksheet. Complete and score your answers.

Session 7: Children's Rights

This sections will provide you with information of the rights of consumers and professionals.

1. Read the sections on Rights of Children in Foster Care.

Class Assignment

Print out and complete the Assessment Questionnaire.

During this discussion, I want you to take a minute to enter the forum and post a summary of what you have learned or discovered from this exercise. Address any obstacles or challenges you might face in this area. Did you discover any personal strengths or needs in this area? Respond to at least one other person's post.

Session 8: Parent's Rights

This section explains the rights of parents of children in care.

1. Read the section on Rights of Parents in Foster Care

Forum: Parent's Rights Discussion

1. After reading the material please post in the forum discussion area. I would like you to address the following in your discussion:

  • What is your reaction to these rights?
  • Do you agree with all twelve points?
  • Do you do all that you can to respect birth parents' rights?
  • What are some challenges you face?
  • Give at least two examples of when you supported birth parents' rights.

2. Make sure you respond to your fellow student's postings as well.

Session 9: Social Worker's Rights

This section focuses on the Rights of the Social Worker.

1. Enter the forum area and address and cover the following points:

  • What are some of the rewards you find in providing care for children.
  • If you are not a social worker, what are some rewards you find in providing care for children either in your home or as a residential staff person?
